My Entryway May Be Tiny But- It's No Match for Me!

Since my tiny apartment has no coat closet, I use several repurposed wreath hangers on the door to hang a few coats, an umbrella, and cloth shopping bag. There is also a wooden cube I made, turned sideways with a cushion on top and a fabric covered cardboard box, for shoe storage. You can sit on that cube to put your shoes on or take them off in comfort....very handy on those days when your arthritis is making itself a nuisance.

I'm loving your innovative ideas! I'd love to see some pictures so that I can copy your brilliance!

  • Excellent idea! Not everyone has a grand entrance, foyer or mudroom, me included. Have never figured out why West Coast homes are built without mudrooms or a proper pantry . . . This sounds like a perfect solution. I do something similar when I have a bunch of people over. And if it is raining, we place the drippy umbrellas in the guest bath shower.

Thanks. I seem to have a very creative mind for thinking outside the box (and sometimes inside the box LOL). My mom raised me with the belief "there are two uses for everything in this world, three if you're really creative".

My apartment is only 600 sq. ft. so there's barely enough room to get in the door since the side of the fridge is right there. In fact the door just barely clears that and the wood cube seat is on the other side of the 'entryway'. That cardboard box just happened to be the right size to fit inside the cube so seemed the perfect place to put the shoes out of the way. Covered it in fabric so it looked better. I like your idea about the drippy umbrella in the shower.....I do the same thing but it always drips all the way to the bathroom. Maybe I'll find a tall square vase to use as an umbrella catch-all, maybe attach it to the size of that cube seat.

I built a tall, narrow shelving unit to put inside the tiny storage closet as a pantry(in two pieces in case I ever have to move it). Holds a lot but only has a tiny footprint.

Would love to see a photo of it.

Sounds very smart. I suggest putting a mirror in the kitchen, and add a little bag or shelf to hold an extra comb, a hand towel, and a plastic bag (grocery store or newspaper bag) to put a wet umbrella in to carry it to the shower. I love your ideas. Best wishes!

Thanks! I was raised in small trailers and even a travel trailer so learned to be creative from my earliest childhood. I can create storage where you didn't think you had room for any.

I now have a tall plastic square vase I got from Dollar Tree near the door and my wet umbrella goes into that to dry. No more wet floor or drips across the apartment to put it in the tub to dry and it's handy for going out in the rain without searching for it.

I wish I could but have no way to upload one since I use the library computer. It's just a wood box I made with the opening on the side. The fabric covered box goes inside. The back of the door has my coats and stuff hanging on it.
