You can decoupage your favorite magazine onto it!!

You can change the look with adding knobs or draw pulls. I would not do any crazy in case you change your mine. For a pop of color drape it with a table runner.

Painting it would be good. Add thin decorative moulding on the drawer fronts to help soften the boxy look. New knobs and hardware always do a lot to change the look too

I had a worn-down dresser that I turned into a cabinet. I removed the drawers and put coaster wheels on them. Then I rolled them under the bed for extra storage.

Back to the dresser shell. I removed the drawer track hardware and cleaned up my new shelves. I found a leftover piece of baseboard trim from my own pile and two shutters that I rescued from the trash man. Shutters are so useful for so many projects. I used old shutters and an old bed frame to make a gothic church styled bench (but that's another project.)

I cut the baseboard trim to cover the outer edges of the front, plus one strip down the center. I cut the shutters to fit the hole then stained the shutters and trim in walnut and the main body of the cabinet I painted a hunter green. You can use your favorite color and any color stain or paint to do your trim and drawers. I'd paint yours, Leah, a rich, vibrant color to brighten up and add a pop of color to your room.

I put towel holders on the side and use mine in the bathroom to store sheets and towels, but it can hold clothes, blankets or used in the kitchen to hold food, pots, pans, etc. Shelves can even be removed giving the remaining shelves more height for taller items that needs stored.

Best part of doing this, you'll have doubled your storage space because you still have the drawers on wheels under your bed. And your dull dresser becomes a classy piece of furniture with a brand new life.

All it took was a quart of paint, a quart of stain, 4 coaster/swivel wheels per drawer (2 drawers=8 swivel wheels, etc.) and hardware for the two shutter doors. The rest was recycled materials making me appreciate it even more.

You could also put some furniture decals on it - I found some really nice ones on Etsy!

looking at your picture, it looks like you have a Malm dresser. Go on the IKEA website immediately and check to see if this is one of the dressers they recently recalled due to it tipping over and killing many children including a 2 year old in PA. Not trying to be a downer but I too had one and had my 2 yr. old grandson over my house at least once a week and didn't want to take a chance. I contacted them and told them I had moved to an area that the closest IKEA was 4 hrs. away. They arranged to have it picked up and after they received it back, sent me a check for $194.74 ( included tax). There should be a sticker inside on one of the side panels with they info they need. If it turns out it's not one of the recalled dressers, have fun decorating it.

    You're very welcome, Leah.

The main idea is that you're daring enough to consider redoing your plain dresser. You have the opportunity to make your average, mass-produced dresser into a one of a kind work of art reflecting your own style, taste and creative imagination. Remember, you'll have made something that probably will be unlike any other Ikea dresser owner so it will give you a great conversation piece that you'll have bragging rights to for years to come.

And have no fears, there's not much you can do to completely ruin it. Be brave, dispel any second guessing, and just go for it. I doubt you'll regret it, I never have. Good luck and keep us updated on your final outcome. I can't wait to see what you've come up with.

Paint it -- could paint the sides/top one color and each drawer another -- don't forget the knobs or drawer pulls. Or you could take out one or two drawers and use baskets instead. I like the moulding idea too. Or leave it white and stencil a big sunflower on it. Or stencil your favorite saying in black script. Go to Hometalk and search "stencils"
