Chalk paint is the way t go!
Take the doors off lay them flat. Put painters tape on the opposite side your are painting to stop runs from getting on the other side. Use a good primer. remove all the hardware. Check the direction of the wood and figure out first which piece you will paint first and then last. This will help not to leave brush marks. As a senior citizen i would paint it in the day light hours. Indoor lights at night leave a glare that may hide the fact you missed a spot.
If you don't plan to sand them be sure to THOROUGHLY wash them down with something like TSP. I've done several cabinet renovations and even if you prime with quality products if they aren't clean you have chips and scratches easily.
okay there is real wood, veneer wood, sawdust wood, and a few other wood looking things out there.. if real wood, clean thoroughly.. let dry. when dry, strip the finish off or sand it off. if sanding use a tack cloth to remove all the sanding dust. if you want to paint them, a stain blocking primer is what you need. you may need 2 coats of it. then a top coat of paint. let each coat of paint/primer cure for 24h. don't paint in a humid area- you may end up with a sticky mess.
I'm a professional decorator and what I use is the "Cabinet Transformation kit by Rustoleum". It is somewhat labor intensive but you will look like you've purchased brand new cabinets, it also allows the "grain" of the wood to come thru! It comes in a variety of color choices.
You can purchase it at Home Depot, and I believe Walmart carries it now as well. It comes in 2 sizes, you will need the large for that project. Approx. $150 for the large. These is also another kit for "counters." These come with instructional DVD.
My daughter did her own in the pix below. She did a great job all by herself with several little kiddo's underfoot!
Hope this helps ... best of luck!
