Here's some Hometak posts on fireplace decor, maybe you can get some ideas. http://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=fireplace

You can buy an electric fireplace insert fairly cheap ( about 65-80$) and install it into any kind of structure you build...even into an existing entertainment center.

Blue Roof Cabin has a good tutorial on making one. Otherwise, I just watched Craigslist until a fireplace surround came up for sale. I purchased a solid oak one for $50. My husband attached a piece of plywood across the back of the opening and then I painted a faux inside surround. I used black paint for the faux opening. I have a vintage window set up against it. We hung it by using a cleat on the wall.

Buy or make a fireplace surround (so many ideas on the web , here or pinterest on how to DIY fireplace) and home improvement stores (or other places) carry the rock veneer that look real if wanting a stone fireplace. And then do like Therese C. suggested get an electric log heater insert you can use flames/embers with or without heat. GL and post pictures of your fireplace.
