Yes you can! You can use chalk paint or chalkboard paint- thats what we did, we LOVE it!

Although it is a lot of up-keep ,my opinion trying to paint it will be more of a hassle.
of course you can. I had painted a sm. deepfreezer, and then tole painted it.
I second the chalkboard paint idea! It makes lists easier and adds a lot of fun to the kitchen!
chalkboard paint works great and the grandchildren leave me their art work on the fridge and later I was it off and start all over again (ART)
Vinyl wrap. It can be done in any color or design that you like. There should be someone in or near your area that does wraps.
I'm so happy to see that some people dislike stainless steel as much as my husband and I do. We would never buy SS appliances - greatly prefer that (old? returning?) classic white look. :)
My daughter had hers professionally painted. It wasn't very expensive, looked great, and never showed wear.
I painted our old refrigerator with a few cans of spray paint for painting cars. I lightly sanded it with a rotor sander, and just sprayed it. We'd bought it cheap at a garage sale, so we weren't worried if it hadn't worked out. But it worked out just fine. The biggest thing when painting with the spray paint was to sweep it lightly and use many, many, very light coats. We tried it first on the side that would be hidden by the wall and by the time we were done, we'd perfected the technique.
Chalk paint is the best! You can even glue molding on the fridge and paint the whole thing to look like your fridge is a cabinet. If you want it to look more "farmhouse" or vintage-y use dark wax along the corners. How To Use Chalkpaint to Fake an Expensive Shabby Chic Nightstand
Try covering it with peel and stick chalkboard. I did this once and it looked really cute.
they have appliance paint in the hardware store, Make sure you get the one for stainless steel
Thanks everyone for your great ideas!!!
Looks like you have a solution so good for you, good luck and remember mistakes are a way to learn the important thing is to try and not give up. Push comes to shove cover with contact paper in white. Gods blessings.
does anyone have photos of their finished work? I’m considering painting mine pink!
Yes, I've covered my fridge and cooker hood with homemade chalk paint (emulsion/latex with calcium carbonate), I gave it 3 coats as I was worried, I sealed ot with Johnsons tin of clear wax which I put on with a microfibre cloth, no need to slap on with a brush and buff off that's just waste! Not got a single scratch or chip on it either in 5 months, the wax dried matt but gives a great waterproof seal so any splashes/grease wipe off easily. I'm going to relax soon to keep it safe
Can I use magnetic paint to paint my stainless fridge? I hate the stainless too and I hate not being able to put magnets on it.
Why not use Contact to cover it if you really don't like it! or maybe Sell it and buy one you do like!
