we need to remove the old carpet from our house. The house was built in the 60's and has brown tiles under the carpet. Painting the tile is out as there is know damage along the sides. Any ideas on an inexpensive way to cover the tiles so we can rid our home of this old carpet? The replacement floor will need to be easy to clean. We have 2 kids & 3 dogs.

Well you can re-carpet with a more stain resistant carpet. Or Carpet tiles and you can always replace them as needed.

i live in the 60's home I grew up in..we replaced the pink carpet with laminate flooring we paid 89 cents a square foot.. laminate flooring is great for high traffic..especially with dogs ..Lumber liquidators is a great place to buy..or you can remove the brown tiles and paint the concrete underneath ..would have to do a little more work to prep the floor..

@Shirley Vanderau Thank you for your response. I'll check to see what Lumber Liquidators has. 89 cents is very affordable.

Use a linoleum that has something like a wooden floor pattern on it. Highly washable, cheap, effective and easy to lay! Modern lino's have come a long way! Good luck!

Pop into Home Depot and look at the Trafficmaster Allure vinyl plank flooring. I seriously love this stuff! I have it in one bathroom and can't wait to replace the laminate in other parts of the house with it. It's very budget friendly--about $1.98 sq/ft. as I recall. Easy for the DIY-er to install--just requires something to measure with and scissors or utility knife to cut it. If your tiles are in good shape, you can install right over them. Since it's vinyl it is soft and quiet to walk on, very easy to clean (spills and pet accidents wipe right up) so it's great for homes with kids and pets. Vinyl won't swell and warp like laminate does with water/moisture exposure.

You can also purchase laminate flooring cheaply online (more cheaply even delivered than box stores) Wayfair.com is where I got mine (won in a This old House shopping spree-- but their prices were great! and soo many choices). I have also seen here the following posts 1. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/floors-ceilings/paper-bag-flooring-2852679 (you could paint like hers or stain to look like leather) 2. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/floors-ceilings/diy-plywood-floor-1942127 (could use any stain color or paint on the planks)

Also I took vinyl tiles 18 x 18 " squares and cut them into 6 x 18" pieces and laid them like wood planks in entry and bathrooms. (excuse pic: winning the flooring pretty much started a whole house remodel and I was filling in paneling lines to do wall treatment when pic. was taken ,will include pic of finished wall surface)

What is the sub flooring? If it is in good shape you may want to consider just painting it.you can paint it a solid color or paint it to look like a rug or carpet or big squares and rectangles of soft muted colors. Use a good sealer and you are set! Inexpensive and looks great. I have a friend who buys linoleum, flips it over and primes and paints the back side for great area rug. She hand paints them but a stencil would also work .
