Any Ideas for making a rug from cotton piping and mesh?

I was I instructed to use tiny rubber bands to hold the folded 4" pieces to the mesh. Any one have a better idea? The rubber bands make a lump on the bottom of the rug so it's not that soft to walk on. Otherwise I love my rug.

I also have only seen it done with rubber bands. But I'd love to see a picture of your finished product!
