They make a metal frame now that will hold just the mattress alone. Depending on where you get it, Wal mart anad up the price is 60 to a 100 dollars. They work great and fit a skirt. There is almost 12 " clearance under for great storage

put the box spring on the floor

  • I have the standard metal frame, box springs and thick (tall), matress. Purchased the matress and box springs together as a set. I am not fond of the "pillow top" style as I am old school where you flipped and rotated the mattress once a month for even wear. You can't flip a pillow top and I am unable to rotate without help. Mind you I have had several back surgeries, so I am a bit more mindful of everyday activities. And this is the last pillow top I will own.

You don't need a 'box spring' with the new mattresses. RV's haven't used anything but plywood platform for years. I took the bed frame, left the bed slats in it (if you don't have bed slats, buy some 1" x 4" wood and make some to fit your frame and then put a sheet of 1/2" plywood on top of them. That is all your mattress really needs. Bedskirts thumbtack to the plywood or use velcro or gripper snaps if you want it removable for washing.

I have an antique reproduction bed frame which I made from a kit. It has very heavy L-bracket for the box spring to rest on - so the bottom of the box is about 6 inches below the side frame members. Works fine, but must have a skirt of some kind to cover the protruding box spring... I don't know were you could get the

l brackets, mine came with the bed kit. I think I got the kit from Cohasset furniture... About 35 years to ago. So don't know if they are even still in business.
