That really is a matter of you decorating style, however if it was my kitchen I would the lighter counter to offset the good.
wood
IMO the soapstone would look good, since it is a more blue tone and the opposite of orange on the colour wheel. I have blue-aqua tones with my oak, and I like the effect.
I agree, soapstone would be really nice- like this Hometalker's kitchen http://www.hometalk.com/diy/kitchen-dining/creating-my-modern-farmhouse-kitchen-3927362?expand_all_questions=1
Creating My {Modern Farmhouse} Kitchen
You need white or very light to offset the dark. I would choose a quartz since it is so versatile and worry-free. Perhaps the opposite of soapstone- white with grey veining. You never have to worry about sealing quartz and the new colors are amazing!
I love what you have done so far.
I like the soapstone....I would add pops of bright color with rugs and accessories.
What's wrong with the way it is now? I think that if you put something dark the room is going to be dark. Anyway I personally love soapstone. But it would make things look more country like where something shiny would modernize anything. So it just depends on your overall look. What style for home.
I have oak cabinets as well, and I chose a color dictated by the flooring--we have cola colored stained concrete . It's been in almost 10 yeas, and I still like the look, but sometimes I'm a bit swayed by the lighter cabinets/countertops/etc you see now. Tastes change, no getting around it! And you can't know what the next fad will be so choose what suits you! (I do like the soapstone.)
