I have Laminate flooring and to me it is the easiest to maintain.

Generally its personal taste. Carpeting is better left for the pros unless you've done it before. They have the tools and expertise. Laminate is the easiest. Its a floating floor so no gluing or nailing, Stick on vinyl that looks like wood would be next in line. Ceramic tile would be next. Prep is the key. Good subfloor, applying thinset, cutting tile to fit, then grouting and sealing the grout. Lot of websites and Youtube videos on installing different flooring.

I'm also looking to replace carpeting. Check out Shaw vinyl plank flooring. Consumer Report rated it #1. Quality vinyl plank flooring doesn't necessarily lower your home value. I have a cat, dog and a saltwater pool to consider in my final decision of flooring to put in. When we do sell our house the durability of the flooring could make a difference.
