I like your idea of making triangles on the corners.
I would use the triangles. Great idea. If you can cut the triangles so the fit tightly between the frame and angle support, lay the canvas on a flat surface face down, adjust the triangles till it lays flat, then glue and nail/screw the triangles. Once you have it laying flat, check it on a wall before nailing/screwing.
You could attach the corners with velcro strips - 3M makes some that won't mark up your wall.
A handyman was here today and noted that one of the boards is bowed. I'm going to take it back to the store and exchange it.

try to return it, if it is still wrapped. If you cannot return it, get a thin piece of Luann wood and affix it to the back. If you are afrain you will split the wood you c ould try getting it wet and letting it dry(weighted) on a flat surface.
