Ok. If there are stains from water then rub any oily substance onto them with a soft cloth in a circular motion. If they are everyday stains make a mixture of baking soda and water into a paste and apply leaving long enough for the stains to come to the surface, then wash with a mixture of hot water and dawn.

It depends on what it is made of, wood, (finished or not), laminate, particle board or worse MDF under a vinyl laminate.

If it is real wood it will depend on whether it is finished or not? Then the type of stain will have to be determined. An oil base stain is not treated the same as an organic stain, whether plant or animal.

If it is laminated, I would say you have next to no hope to remove staining. You would save time, money, and frustration if you were to just degrease it, let it dry, sand it to remove any residual finish, prime and paint.

This would depend on if you want a wood finish, which you can get again. Do a faux paint job on it in the wood grain and color you prefer, then put a sealer, several layers to protect your work. Or just prime, paint, and seal, it is up to you.

If you more information people can help with specifics.
