A man-made product (usually plastic) that is actually ‘printed’ to look like it has woodgrain. It allows manufacturers to create furniture, cabinets, and flooring for less money. You CANNOT stain laminate. It does not absorb stain! It’s not wood! Some people have use gel stain but the end product looks like paint and it takes 5 to 10 days for the gel stain to dry since it is on the surface.
You might try chalk paint instead, like this Hometalker did: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/bedroom/dressers/free-rescued-laminate-dresser-zero-dollar-makeover-free-12773131

I heard Rustoleum has a kit out now that permits "painting" of laminate. I have never tried it but thinking of doing so to re-do my kitchen table. May be purchased at Lowes or Home Depot.
Sand it with 80 grit, prime it with a primer recommended for laminate and tinted a light brown, paint it the lightest color in the woodgrain and streaks are good, dry brush it with the darkest color in the wood trying to leave lots of brush marks, go over it with a graining tool while still wet, if necessary dry brush it again. Let it dry between each application of paint or primer. Master artist duplicated wood grain and they didn't even have our technology or equipment.
