I use carbon paper when I want to paint lettering. I print what I want on the computer in the font and size I like, then lay the carbon on the piece I am working on, then put the print out on top. I trace all the outlines of the letters with a pencil and when you lift the papers off, you have a charcoal outline of the letters you can paint in. Are you talking about transferring a decal?
Once you let the US dry, it will not smear, it is more of a stain.
