I would try inserting a toothpick to fill some of the gap and fill the rest in with wood glue that dries clear.
Turn the chair over, remove the spindles that fall out or are loose. Squeeze some wood glue into the holes. Insert the spindles back in. Take a rope and tie it around the legs. Use a pencil, butter knife, mixing spoon, etc., and twist the rope tight. Wipe off any glue that squeezes out. Let it sit overnight for glue to dry.
Product called Chair Lock at Home Depot
this happens a lot during heating season when wooden furnitpure drys out. Repair it. Don't use the chairs or you may damage and break them.
