Score with roller/scorer thing to make holes through the wallpaper then wet thoroughly with fabric softener mixed with 1/2 water and 1/2 softener. Let rest for 15 min or more, but keep wet, then start pulling, scraping, etc. working with a small area (3' x 3' or so) at a time. If you can score a larger area, and wet it down, it will go faster. Usually you get the top layer off then need to add more of the liquid to get down to the bare bottom. Patience and a lot of work pays off with a clean base. Good luck!

I did try vinegar but the paper didn't budge. The paper is heavy and has a slight shine to it. We're going to try and score it again and spray it and hopefully it will work.

      Thank you

Take a garden sprayer the pump up kind and fill it with hot water and a bit of dawn detergent. Pump it up and Spray away and the paper will peel off the wall easily with a scraper. Did 6 rooms of wallpaper in one day using this. Just put a dropcloth down to protect the floors and to throw your wallpaper on just grab the corners and go dump it.

Can also add vinegar with the dawn detergent

I have friends who swear by the fabric softener method-non toxic - soak paper and peel or scrape off.

Thank you for you suggestion. We have tried all of the suggested methods - scoring, vinegar, fabric softener, even specifically recommended products for paper removal - the paper is coming off in little bits and pieces. We just called a rental company to check on steamer rentals. After that we might check and see how much it would cost to hire a professional. We hate to do that but we're curious to see how much it would cost.

I purchased the chem spray for removal ($5) scored it with the tool designed for this and used a steamer...the heat breaks down the glue making the project so much easier. A small steamer can be purchased for under $30 and is well worth it.

Thank you - we were just talking about renting a steamer to try and remove the paper. I think that's the last option - we've tried vinegar, fabric softener, scoring, and we also purchased several products to spray on the paper - no luck. I hope the steamer works.

Agree with Tootsie Meese. Live in 100+ yr old house. Had multi layers of paint over wallpaper, repeat, repeat. Best investment is a wallpaper steamer. Score paper and soak down. Then hold steamer on an area for a bit. Scrape away with a flat blade as in a putty knife. Keep soaked at all times. To finish, wipe well with vingegar and warm water to remove any traces of residual glue. Tried the fabric softener and other treatments without success until I got the steamer.

You can also rent a wallpaper steamer too. You need a lot of patience and elbow greese and patience..and when it is finally off...wash and scrubb that walk and rinse and rinse and rinse. You'll need to remove all that soap and or softener completely.

The tool that you score the wallpaper with is called a paper tiger. Don't over score it or it will come off in smaller pieces.

Thank you Marion. I appreciate your helpful hints. I have tried several methods and I was going to check out a steamer. Hopefully, that will do the trick.

    Have a nice day.

Steamer Steamer Steamer!! I tried everything on my walls from using chemicals, to hot water, scoring, peeling, pulling...nothing worked. Finally, I went to home depot, purchased a 50 dollar wagner steamer and voila, peeled off like a charm. Takes time but was so worth it considering that wall paper removal is more expensive than painting.

  • Denise Asher Denise Asher on Mar 31, 2017

Thanks Phil. We're out of town but have decided to rent a steamer when we get home and hopefully that will work.

I've removed lots of paper over the years. Patience is a big help. Many times I have used a garden sprayer filled with warm water and ammonia. Work in small areas. Soak the paper over and over for 15 to 30 minutes and while you're on that area with a scraper, soak another area. Give it plenty of time to loosen the old paste.
