Use liquid dishwashing detergent- Mix 1/4 tsp detergent with a cup of water and spray that on your carpet. Leave it for about ten minutes and then blot the spot dry. Repeat until your carpet is clean. Just make sure not to rub!
I have found the easiest way to remedy that is to place a bowl over top of the grunge to keep it from being walked on and allow it to totally dry. Once dry, it comes right up with a vacuum. If any spot is left behind then the dish liquid trick will work to remove it but I have never had to do anything else.
As Sassyfox said.... let it DRY! If you try to clean it up while still damp you will only make MUD. So, let it completely dry. Then try to scrape up as much as possible, then vacuum up what is left. At that point, if there is still dirt there you can use an old toothbrush to loosen the dirt from the carpet fiber. Vacuum again. After you have gotten up as much as possible, only then can you use your choice of cleaning product.
I did this not long ago... I used MEAN GREEN and it worked great!
