Are you wanting a portable or stationary island? Here is an example I posted here a couple weeks ago: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/kitchen-dining/kitchen-dining-furniture/custom-kitchen-island-feature-27927800
We used some cabinets and backed it with this barnwood and it turned out great!
Custom Kitchen Island Feature
What about this? You just need an old cabinet and you can add 2 x 4 for extra heigt! http://www.hometalk.com/diy/kitchen-dining/kitchen-dining-furniture/repurposed-table-to-new-kitchen-island-9380847
New Island
I used an old dresser. It was the same height as my cabinets. I added some oversized porcelain tile to the top. Just attached with Velcro since it was the right width and I did not want to glue anything to the top of the dresser. It has no casters as I didn't want it any higher, but I put chair glides on the bottom of the legs and it moves very easily.
Attached is a picture.
I purchased a dining room server. It works great. The back is finished and the top expands to a longer length. Mine is on wheels so i can move it to where I need it.
You order cabinets and top to either match home cabinets if you like them or pick a totally different style and color. I think top has to match what you have if it's granite or anything that resembles stone but you could just have solid finish laminate. If you have solid color now then maybe add a stone top in laminate. The point is to make it look as it's always been there.
