I saw a great painted adult sized teeter-totter made from them.
When I was a kid my father worked for the telephone company. Those cable spools held wire. We painted them and made picnic tables for our backyard. Kids could play and use them too.
The center hole is perfect for holding a patio umbrella! Have one we stained & sealed for use next to the horseshoe pit. Might go a little further & recess a small thermos cooler inside the center spindle this year!

Garden Spools
It also makes a GREAT indoor dining room table...A neighbor had one in her back yard. She only had ONE round section which became the table top. The middle was the spool itself, which was cut in half. (So there were 3 parts) When we put the spool section together and the outside round part on top, we stained it. It was BEAUTIFUL. When I sold my house, people that came in for open house remarked about it. Because there was no bottom round part, we just slipped some ladder back chairs around it. Sat 5 or 6 people comfortably.
