Door changes

My son needs to change his pantry door. He needs to cut it in half (top and bottom). It is a sold door painted white. his kitchen is green and white with black appliances. The door is next to a downward staircase. There is a railing, then his pantry, then at a 90 degree angle a knee wall into his family room, he wants to put a breakfast bar on the kneewall.

Perhaps instead of a single solid door, he could use narrow double doors and cut those in half. That way the doors won't interfere with sounds like a pretty confined space. Louvered doors would add interest.
