How should I plant my seeds and bulbs?

I bought a lot of seeds and bulbs to plant in my flower bed for spring. I hope this is not a stupid question. Is it okay to just plant the seeds in the ground and not start them off in seed starters or the tiny pots for seed growing? I have thousands of seeds to plant.

    Hi Toni,

Of course it depends on the seeds and bulbs. Some bulbs require "chilling" (cold weather) for dormancy. You can mimic this by putting them in a bag in your refrigerator. However, depending on the bulb and your location, bulbs should be coming up about right now (I'm in zone 7, Alabama). A lot of bulbs can't handle mid-summer heat so, as mentioned, it depends on the type of bulb.

As far as the seeds go, do you just want them scattered or each flower in a particular spot? I in a particular spot, I'd say best to start them in pots as you don't want to rely on a seed not germinating and leaving an empty spot where you expected a plant.

If scattered, I'd say through those puppies out and see what happens. As they come up and start to grow, pluck the ones out that are smaller to avoid overcrowding and let the stronger ones take charge.

I put the bulbs in the freezer in hopes that I could get them to bloom this spring. I am in northeast Georgia and we are having some pretty cold weather this week. Probably the last cold snap for this winter season.

Toni, in NE GA you probably bought bulbs that will bloom in the summer such as lilies, which I adore! Go ahead and plant them now for blooms around June and July if they are the Asian type. For the seeds, they'll have a better chance in our area just put in the ground this time of year. Be sure to follow the instructions on the packet for the depth of planting and you should be ok. Sometimes, no matter how perfectly you execute the plan it just doesn't work but don't be discouraged! That's the part of gardening that's to be expected, especially in our SE area. Good luck with your planting!!!!

Plant the tulips and daffodils bulbs in the back area of the garden so that when they die, you won't see the green leaves dying and when dead easier to pluck. I like buying a variety of seeds and mixing them and scattering them and lightly cover them with Miracle Grow potting soil that will feed them for 6 months. Good luck. The glads, I believe, should be planted in early spring after the first frost.

Seeds should be planted when there is no more threat of frost. If you like an orderly type garden plant the tallest flowers in the back and graduate them by height, if you like eclectic better, just mix and scatter. Agree with Sac3, would cover with a light layer of quality plant soil.

Thanks. I was just informed that putting bulbs in the freezer kills them.
