Use nail polish remover. Try a very small area first using a q-tip and if that works use it for the rest. It should work even though the ink is very old. Good luck!
You can also try using lemon juice. The acidity dissolves the ink (but be careful because it also dissolves the paper).
Anyone who remembers using that tiny strip of white paper on the old typewriters for erasing mistakes? I used that, by rubbing the white paper back and forth on the ink. Worked like a charm.
