You can try coming in front of the garden beds with sharp rocks,or fencing.however if that is to much you can try sprinkling cayenne pepper and ground mustard as they do not care for the scent, however it will have to be re-applied.
You can also put in spikes, bamboo skewers or some 'temporary' spiked, barbed wire coil border, they will learn. They are only in there because you were and want to help. Once plants settled in, less likely they will dig there.
I would never use anything that would hurt anyone's pups. Liability concerns due to intent. I agree with Janet! Cayenne pepper, red pepper, chili pepper. One sniff and they will learn and it won't hurt them.
They don't like spicy stuff so you can mix crushed pepper and powdered mustard and sprinkle that around. They also don't like bitter stuff so you can sprinkle bitter orange dissolved on used coffee grinds to keep them out. Good luck!
This YouTube video was posted as a method to keep squirrels out of your garden, but I've had more success repelling dogs than squirrels. I didn't bother with the popsicle sticks, however, the life span is shortened somewhat due to more exposure to the elements.
