You need to kill the mildew and many will say clorax??? Make a mixture of white vinegar and water, spray on the umbrella and leave on long enough to kill the mildew. Allow to dry out then follow with dawn soap and water ,scrub with a brush, rinse and air dry in the sun.

I'm a fan of the white vinegar spray as well. Worked for me!

If you are looking for a product that works great - Charlies Soap makes an all-purpose cleaner that is incredible on mold. Especially on awnings and canvas furniture. You just spray it on, let it sit, add water scrub and rinse. Truly amazing. I used to own a retail store that specialized in green cleaning products. That was a favorite for people who owned trailers and campers!
