Several times in the past couple of months I’ve hinted at showing you guys my master bedroom refresh! It all started when I decided to move the head of my bed from under the south facing windows to the east wall. It opened up the room so much – I can dance up here now! But it left me with a couple of issues, the first big one was that I could no longer use my washstand as my bedside table (not enough room any more) and neither could I use the dresser for the other side. So, on I went thrifting on the search for bedside tables, their makeover was a fun and easy one, check it out here.

OMG I can’t believe its been two years since this post came out. Since then my master bedroom has gone through a ton of transformations, almost as many as I have myself! I’m a single gal now and if you would like see my master bedroom haven as it is now  check it out here!

Moving my headboard meant I had all kinds of sheet rock anchors and beat up sheetrock to fix under the windows and then repainting to do. The floor was also VERY beat up in a few places from the steel wheels on my old bedframe. With those things fixed and with the new bedside tables moved in I was left wondering what I was going to do with my pretty little old washstand.

At first I was going to put it in my master bathroom, moving the magazine rack that was there to another part of the house but when I was moving things around it dawned on me that it worked just fine on my north wall. Its nice because it also giving me a bit of a landing surface when I first come up because its not far from the top of the staircase. I also didn’t want to do a full reveal here on the blog until I got my bedframe done! Which I did just a couple of weeks ago! One little reminder of what this room looked like before the renovation.

Just check out that linoleum! If you look close you can see that there is an incredible amount of dead bugs on the floor, yes this was the longest abandoned and creepiest part of the whole house. It started where my mom and aunt were in the this room and my grandparents were in the other room (that became my master bath) but as they grew up my grandparents moved downstairs and this became my aunt’s bedroom.

So, when she moved out, it pretty much never had anyone in it again and that was forty years ago. When I began my big renovation this is where I started gutting and I will never forget shoveling the ancient, filthy, absolutely horrible insulation, plaster and lath down the staircase. I was NEVER dirtier then I was that day! Hard to believe that under all of that were gorgeous hard wood floors.

I’m so impressed with how these pieces I inherited from my Grandma have held up over the years. I primed and painted them four years ago before they ended up in storage throughout the majority of the renovation. Of course they got their fair share of dings (mostly just getting up my narrow staircase!) but all in they’re just as shiny as when I finished them.

And it remains so cool to me that that big dresser with the mirror on the back of it literally came back to the exact same wall it was on for forty years. Aw, my biggest regrets will always be that I did not take enough before pictures, what I wouldn’t give to have the pic of that dresser sitting there, covered in dust before I moved it out!

I love my comforter set! It was gift to me: You can check it out here on Amazon.I even managed to fit it into my washer/dryer combo unit to wash it the other day. Always nice when I don’t have to make a trip to the laundry mat in town. So, I really love my new refresh, mostly just having the floor space to move around now is just amazing, my room feels so much bigger. From a design perspective though it was harder to photograph and the room itself is not as “striking” as it was when I had the bed under the windows. I am reminded of a design tip I read once that said your bed should be the first thing you see when you walk in the room. So, perhaps my bedroom is not as “design savvy” as it was – but it works better for us now… SO much better. And that, at least to me, is much more important – I am living here after all

Not a question but an observation - I'm prolly your grandmother's age! "Back when" we were always told the bed should be as far away from the door as possible. And it should be facing away from the door if possible. In other words, someone sleeping in bed would be facing away from the door. More privacy and makes the room appear larger. Your makeover is beautiful and wonderful that you're in your grandmother's house.

I love what I've seen so far. Did you move into an empty house or did you have a storage unit or garage to place everything? It seems so spacious.

Three weeks ago we moved into my grandmother's 109 year old house. We spent two and half years trying to empty it when we lived 250 miles away, so could only visit occasionally to clear. But now we've moved in with most rooms cleared but with all of our possessions. Where did you start? I'm feeling quite daunted, as the house has never been modernised apart from electricity in the twenties and it's first bathroom in the eighties! No central heating and the windows need double glazing !! I don't know whether to panic or be excited, now that we've moved in?

    Any advice gratefully received?

Why not paint the brown chest black?

Great job! I think the pine chest at the foot of the bed looks out of place, though.

Well in the end the decor in my home is secondary to the pieces that are important to me, we've gotta live here in the end, this will never be a show home :)
