Pour baking soda in the toilet followed by white vinegar,it will start to fizz,leave in the toilet over night to aid in cleaning and disinfecting.I also put the white vinegar in the tank and flush it through the next day.
Turn off the water shutoff, use the last flush then take a 1/2 cup of baking soda under the flapper that gets held up when you flush. Follow it by a cup of hot white vinegar. Turn the shutoff back on. Done.
there is no need to shut the water off...have done this numerous times

You cannot leave the vinegar in the tank long term but most bathroom cleaners are even more caustic. You can use the vinegar in foods, right? I would not use it weekly because the rubber parts might wear out sooner..I use vinegar for most of my cleaning.
