Find an awesome wallpaper pattern and freshen up the trunk with some mod podge. I love how this came out! http://www.hometalk.com/diy/-28052246

Maybe add a cushion to the top of the trunk and turn it into a seat or ottoman. You can use the inside to store books, magazines, or throw blankets. I've also seen old trunks converted into a file cabinet-it gives a home office a cooler look than a standard file cabinet.

If it is a flat top trunk, they make amazing coffee tables. If it is vintage and you like that older style, not much work needed. At Christmas time I open mine and pile in blankets to help fill it and then put old vintage stuffed animals and toys to display. You could do this year round depending on holiday/occasion, just changing out display pieces.

I would use it to put vining plants in. Don't plant them in the bottom, have a tray made that has legs or can hang in the open trunk. Waterproof it by lining it or putting trays to fill as much of the space as possible. Display with the lid up, it will be beautiful!
