My kitchen is small too - 9' x 9.6 - and when I had it remodeled several yrs. ago the contractor (a cabinetmaker friend of mine) provided for lighting under the cabinets and one pot light over the sink. You could have under-cabinet lighting installed which would give you tons of light. I don't use the under-cabinet lights much although they do come in handy, but a 60 watt over the sink and a 60 watt in the small ceiling fan are adequate for me. I should use the under-cabinet lights more, but forget they're there because I never had them before. The lights do provide a lot of extra light and help prevent eyestrain. The bar size dishwasher I found is also an added pleasure since I never had a dishwasher before. Holds more than I expected; costs as much as a full-size dishwasher; but is well worth the cost. My friend also built me a mobile cart that holds my microwave on top, cutlery drawer, utensil drawer, and a misc. drawer on the bottom for 'stuff' I need in the kitchen. Making decisions with remodels is tough because sometimes it's hard to visualize the end result. Like layout of your cabinets. Good luck.
Recessed Can lights are great.
We're updating our kitchen, too. Might I suggest putting a clock above the sink and hanging a ceiling light? There are some really cool industrial-looking chandeliers on the market right now.
I would look at some small bathroom light fixtures to see if one would suit in there.
Mount a bright led light strip to the underside of the cabinet, fish the wire into the electrical box the existing light is attached to, attach a cover panel for the junction box and hang something decorative in front to cover it up.
There are wonderful options available for lighting under cabinets, which is my recommendation. LED lighting is very ecomical to use.
IKEA has lots of mix and match plug and play LED kitchen cabinet lighting cheap and easy to install. For best effect have a couple of glass cabinet doors with lights in.
That's what I was thinking.. but for now the old one doesn't look to bad now that we are finished..
IKEA has undercounter lighting and its quite bright!
Hi Julie. :) I've used these LED under cabinet lights in my own kitchen and client's kitchens. Since they are LED they are super cheap to use and don't get hot. They also offer nice bright light for tasks, but are dimmable, so you can control how much light it puts out:

Instead of mounting it on the wall though, I'd mount it under the upper cabinet to shine down towards the sink, instead of out towards your eyes. ;)
Hope that helps. Liz from SimpleDecoratingTips.com
