You can go to Home Depot $$$ or you cant pour Morton's Salt on and around the mound, hole, or little sand hill, I have used this and it does work. You have to be consistent and watch for other mounds to pop up. If you are brave break the mound open with a stick and pour your choice of death it will get to the eggs and possibly the control center. Move fast and don't get to close the little buggers move fast and they hurt, as you may already know.

How to safely get rid of fire ants?
I use borax and the ants stay away
Do not use salt! Plants will not grow in ground that has a high salt concentration.
There are products that you can buy at big box stores made specifically to get rid of fire ants.
You can also use, As I have with great results, Diatomaceous Earth. I buy mine in a feed store. Pour a ring of the Earth around the fire ant hill and it will soon disappear. It does have to be renewed if it rains.
If you are brave, you can open the hill and dump hand fulls of Diatomaceous Earth in the center. But you better be quick as the ants will bite.
