Yes you can eat them. I had some long ago and used them like chives. They finally died due to repeated mowing them done.

It's probably wild garlic, not onions. A good application of lime will rid you of both. Check with your local garden center or big box garden center like Lowes or Home Depot, they usually carry it. I put lime in my garden last year and no more wild garlic. You need to know how much to spread per square foot and how to spread it so ask while you're at the garden center.
