You can replace the light switch in the ceiling fan. Easier than replacing the ceiling fan with a light.

Or you could replace the ceiling fan with a new one to give the room a new look! Very easy to do, but best done with help.
Yeah! I am 75 years old and I am suppose to take the fan down to replace the light switch? DUH
Go for the chandelier for some glam. I did this many years ago. If you need a reading light, then get a table lamp or even a floor light with down light.
Maybe it's just changing the darn switch? Not the fixture. It's easy to do. Shut off power at the electric box first. Put the new switch in just like the one that you are removing. Black to black, red to red, ground back where the old one was. You need needle nose players and a screwdriver. Men can do it, so can you. In my experience those chandelers are wirthless As a light source. You can also get a lamp with a swing arm for near your bed...they plug in.
At 75, call a local electrician, or a licened and bonded handyman. In the meantime, they do sell inexpensive book lights to clip on your book or magazine that are battery powered.
Try a clamp on lamp. I used them for years when I had a wooden headboard. They don't work as well on my metal frame, at least not the one I had. Google "clamp on bed lamp" or "bed clip lamp" or variations thereof. Good luck!
Or…a plug-in sconce beside the bed.
I appreciate your reply but I live on Social Security and do not have the money. God bless.
I appreciate your reply but there is a lot of information missing. Do I need to take the fan down? Where is the switch located? Can it be down without taking the fan down? Thanks
Thanks I appreciate the lamps but right now I do not have a place where I can clip them, no headboard.
replace the light part of the ceiling fan i had a small room i purchased a clip on light those little ones that hook right on your book to read runs on batteries
