Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. Lightly sand the doors and cabinets to remove any gloss. Prime with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123. Then paint with your color. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.

my cabinets have at least 3 layers of oil based paint. i am a beginner and have alizehimer pt in home. so really do not want to sand more than I have too. i have never seen idea of coating with polyurethine. the oil based paint has worn off in many areas to reveal previous color. do you think what you said will work should I go back with oil based i know there are newer paints now. any advice appreciated
