Looks like it may be a Religious Shrine Box. Holds a religious figure, artifacts, etc. People would slip their hand in the hole and touch the figure for a daily blessing. It would be opened for viewing on Sundays, Holy Days,

Looks like it was handmade! Most are and sometimes very elaborately decorated.
Hard to tell the measurements but ... End table, maybe can flip the lid for the top. Planter, nice tall plant like a palm or sansevieria . Umbrella stand.

You could use it to store something like linens and towels, or maybe kids' toys. If you added some shelves, you may like to store some books or games for rainy days inside. I want to know what you decide to do with it!

I am not sure about the original use. It is unique. Could you turn the lid upside down and use it for a plant stand?
