Ack! Wood splinters off the cabinet I'm restoring, how can I repair?

I am restoring an antique sewing machine and it's cabinet. In the final step of sanding the cabinet top a large splinter came loose and broke off. (I was hand sanding with fine sand paper.)
Any suggestions regarding how to repair it?

Try wood glue. Sometimes when making small repairs I glue the original piece and then go over it with a light coat of wood filler (it's like bondo for wood). Then I sand to match original surface. All supplies available at Hobby Stores , Home Depot or Lowe's.
