How to refinish unglazed quarry tile?
We have 35 yr old unglazed quarry tile throughout our house. The tile is stained and the grout which was colored has discolored and faded in places. Short of taking up the old tile, is there anything I can do to restore the floor?

First, take care of the grout. There are products that will color existing grout. It is basically a stain you apply with a foam brush. Your problem however will require you to tape off each edge of tile so the stain doesn't change the color or your unglazed tile. After you finish that project, and I know it takes a long time, make sure the tile is absolutely clean. Use TSP is necessary to remove any oil, wax, or ground in dirt. Then apply a tile sealant over the whole floor.
