Great idea, thank you for sharing!!!
I don't use them. They take on smells not worth it I use glass or ceramic containers anything that can be dishwasher and doesn't hold smells.
I use old BF mayo jars to store bulk foods like dried beans, peas, lentils, nuts, teas etc. from the food bank for my disabled clients. I use my old large tubs of Smart Balance for bringing prepared foods like spaghetti, mac n cheese, shepards' pies etc. I also use these and large yogurt containers to mix paints for my furniture projects and decorative painting. I reuse my big white kitty litter buckets for a multitude of things like hauling water when my client's water pumps go out, mop buckets, to keeping 50 yd. electric cords in them, gardening, storing garden fertilizers, and poop scooping (these get thrown out). I store my fabrics in plastic cubes in the top of the spare closet.
To get them clean I put hot water, dish soap and a splash of bleach in them and let them soak in the sink, and repeat if needed. If there is odor, then I leave out the bleach and add some borax to soak.
I like saving margarine tubs for small painting projects, less to clean when done...also like to save when we have company and send them home with leftovers, then I don't have to worry about getting my Tupperware back:)
I use them for any food such as gravy mixes, taco seasoning, bags of cough drops (not food but bags don't stand up). I also have a large plastic container that I use to organize lids to plastic containers used for left overs.
