What can I lay on top of my dining table that isn't too expensive?

I have a pedestal dining table. Oak but the tabletop is just planks of wood about 1/6" apart. Suggestions on what to lay on top that aren't too expensive would be greatly appreciated!

Have you looked on line for table pads? They run the gamut of prices. In searching you may find some unique ideas as well.

Look at lueon (sp) or 1/4 inch plywood. Then stain to match the pedestal and seal. Pick out one with pretty grain. Inexpensive and beautiful

Instead of trying to put something on the table why not dress it up with pretty placemats, tablecloth and a nice centerpiece.

I would but all that's left of the tabletop are rough hewn poor quality wood slats about 1/4" apart. There's no repairing, refinishing or restoring them.

      So, plan B?

I wish I had answers for you. What is the width of your table? How thick are the planks of wood on it now? Could they be removed and moved closer together, then sanded and refinished? What about filling those cracks with a contrasting color wood? Are you emotionally attached to the table? What is your decorating style? Do you have a family? Small children? The reason I ask is that I just envisioned a table with a galvanized metal top.

Maybe as your weather warms you can visit thrift stores, garage sales and such to look for a replacement. Are you just looking for a nicer wood look, or are you open to something like mosaic, or hand painted? Home improvement stores might be able to do solid wood in two pieces, it doesn't cost anything to ask. All just ideas off the top of my head!

Not really an answer but I think copper sheeting would be gorgeous (especially over time! It would take some careful hammering and tacking but man....I think I want to do mine now that it's in my head! I have these heavy vinyl tiles that would cut more easily (I bought them at re-store to replace the top of my tile table with something a bit more quiet)...they cut with a normal razor...I don't know how to exactly finish the edges to look finished b/c mine had wood already around the tile, but they look like real textured tile! Maybe that could be an option...

I confess, my vision of a galvanized table top didn't include "how to" instructions and having never worked with the material I'm not at all sure how one would keep it from having sharp edges. Wish I had better answers for you.

You can use oak (or any other wood that suits) plywood. Cut to fit and edged with veneer tape (http://www.homedepot.com/p/13-16-in-x-25-ft-Oak-Edge-Tape-657659/202843397)

How about engineered wood flooring? Not that expensive, easy to cut. Or even a laminate if you want a more economical solution.

That sounds like a good idea! Does Home Depot cut to order?

  • I was going to suggest glass. That way you can tuck in pretty fabric under it. Or post cards, coloring book pages, any flat momento you may have tucked away.

    • I do not have a formal dining room in this house, I have an eat in kitchen. Also my end tables in the living room and the coffee table. I was tired of the hot or cold beverages on the wood tables, (even though there are ample coasters within an arm's reach), so I purchased glass tops for all of them. I also have a ton of pets and for me, makes it easier to keep things neat and tidy - and clean! Now I am moving on to my bedroom nightstands. Since they were custom made for me by my dad when he was alive, they will be more money as they have to be custom cut. I also want to do both my highboy dressers, but my dad made me those too. Saving my big pennies . . .

Also photos, old and new, look good under the glass. Just be mindful of direct sunlight with your photos.
