You can have raised garden beds built or if that is not possible try portable container gardening.

Yes - raised beds, mounted boxes or pots on walls or fences, and hanging planters on pullys, pullies, whatever...that can be raised and lowered . You can find multiple pot "tree-stands" to elevate flowers and herbs. I used some real looking-feeling artificial grass in some areas, and use a leftover as a grassy blanket to sit/lie on when gardening..and picnics!

I love the grass idea. I live in the desert and won't have to worry about watering. Great idea about the tree stands, I used to have one and loved it.

  • I hear you! My arthritis is getting bad. I scour garage sales for anything to use as plant stands and any old pots or containers. Before you know it, you will have a "pot farm" and will have fun growing almost anything you desire!

I live in a gated senior community and nearly everyone does container gardening. There are many unique ideas for containers, from wine barrels, old sinks, wagons, and so much more. Years ago I even planted a trailing plant in an old toilet, I think I used petunias and put one color in the tank and another in the bowl. Let your imagination go wild!

I started doing strawbale gardening a couple of years ago. Check out Joel Karsten's Strawbale Gardening online. If you have the room, it is a great alternative and no weeding too! https://www.strawbalegardenclub.com/

All good ideas. I found a scoot around gardening cart. It reminds me of a tractor because the seat looks just like one you see on them, the seat height is adjustable, and it has a handle so that you can steer it while remaining seated. There is also a little basket so I can tote my tools with me. I can neither kneel nor stand for long, but love to dig around in my garden. This is a little godsend. I first found it at Amazon, then searched around to get the best price...under $100.

There are a lot of great suggestions.......raised beds, container gardens, pots on wheels, hanging planters, plants on a bench. Your garden, your rules!

I too cannot kneel or stand for long and have problems reaching too high. I found the garden "cart" like JoLeen. I also have a garden"stool" that is just the right heighth and so light and easy to carry around. I think that working in the dirt is therapeutic, and love to plant as well as watch my bulbs coming up and not have to worry about watering pots all the time.

Hay and straw are different. Straw is the yellow bales and is not used for horse feed though sometimes used for bedding. Once used for gardening it will not be useful for bedding as it will break down over time, wonderful mulch or mixed in compost though

I use a u shaped gardening bench that is padded. The arms assist you in getting up and if you need to sit, you flip it over. It folds up. I got it at gardening supply best $35 I ever spent. My property is sloped so the scooter would not have worked for me...lol. Strawbale gardening is just what it sounds like.. dry little weeding, it is it's own mulch. Also container gardens and pots.

Thanks for the info. I'll look for the bench.
