Lightly sand,clean,prime with Kilz or Zinser primer,allow to dry,paint,allow to dry and seal with a polycrylic sealer.
Remove the doors, drawers, and hardware. Lightly sand to remove any gloss, prime with a good stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123, then paint with your color. Seal with at least three coats of a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.
I painted my dark wood cabinets white several years ago, inside and out. They looked great but it was a six-step process and took forever. If I had to do it over, I would hire one of those companies that cleans, primes and spray paints them.
I have in the past bought thin laminate wood cut to cover doors and cabinet sides, for a fresh look.
