You will have to apply a wood preservative for that type of wood. Depending of course the tempempure of your location.

  I agree with Janet, then you could use colourful fence paint if you so choose and hang the little flower pots you can get with long hooks over the top designed to hang over fences. Alternatively you could create "wall art" on your fence panels
