How do you grow onions?

We have planted onions for the past two years and none have gotten over the size of your thumb. We don't know what we are doing wrong. The other vegetables grow and produce fine.

You sent me the website for Burpee but my computer says page not found. I will type in the site to see if it will pull up. Thank you for your reply.

Onion sets produce smaller onions than the onion plants. Try both and see which works better for you.

By onion 'plants' are you referring to onions you planted from seeds right into your garden beds? I've always used sets to get them growing faster due to the potential for late frosts and they haven't gotten really big, but I did get some medium sized ones. LOVE having the fresh green onions for salads and stuff, too!

This Hometalker has some good advice. You can try growing them in containers. Good luck! http://www.hometalk.com/diy/grow/vegetables/how-to-grow-onions-in-containers-4342388

I will try that, thank you.

Here our first frost is about this time of year. It is best to have the onions in the ground in February to get nice bulbs. The later you plant, the poorer the onions.

Generally speaking, onions grow tops in cool weather and form bulbs when the weather warms. Plant onion seeds 4 to 6 weeks before the last average frost—or even earlier indoors or in a cold frame. When indoor seedlings are 2 to 3 inches tall, harden them off by exposing them to above-freezing night temperatures.

onion plants are little skinny onions that are about 6" long. They are bundled together with a rubber band. They look like miniature green onions that you buy in the produce department. I find mine at a local hardware or farm store.
