I'm traveling at the moment so I can't share a photo, but I made coasters with wine corks by cutting each cork (with a razor blade) into 4 pieces, hot gluing all of the small circles together in rows to make a square coaster.
Also, there are a bunch on Hometalk - I like this one as well: https://www.hometalk.com/diy/decorate/rooms/diy-wine-cork-coasters-20647615

You don't have to cut them, if you glue them together in different patterns, it will absorb the heat enough to put a hot dish on. Unless your looking to make a circle, yes then cutting is a necessity! 😉 But you can use different dyes to color them too!
Cut your corks careful to keep the thicknesses the same and glue together by starting in the center and then spiraling outwards. Looks lovely & works great.
Cut the bottom 1/4 of the cork with a craft saw [for fine wood detailing]; with the 'flat side' down: cut the narrow end of the cork at a slight angle on each side [tapering to the center], arrange them in the 'center' with tapered edges toward each other [this is the center of a 'hot pad.' Continue by creating 'flat edges' & add them to the outer edges of the 'center' until you reach the diameter of the 'hot pad' you want. Glue them down on a piece of 'round' wood form that has had felt glued to its base to protect the table top. Make glass/cup coasters by making just the center section of the corks...attach to a piece of cardboard with its bottom covered in felt to protect the table top.
