It could be June or May bugs,laves.They can eat up the roots and then the grass are unable to take up the water,so the ground drys out. But,go to a garden center and ask some one WHO know what it could be,.

It could also be mole rats. Tiny animals who live under ground and compromise your root system. Google yard bumps/mole rats. They're cute but can ruin your yard!!
