Is it stained or coated with poly already? If so you need to sand it all off, then search for the directions for the steel wool in vinegar solution. That will age the wood to look old like barn wood in about 24 hrs. If you want to use paint, i highly recommend chalk paint and distressing it.

Chalkpaint! It's perfect for giving your wooden furniture an updated, rustic look. Annie Sloan has some awesome colors!

Agree with suggestion of chalk paint and a wax paint. You can buy both at Michael's or Hobby Lobby or other craft store. I think Wal Mart now carries it as well. Chalk paint provides good coverage without a primer. Once it's dry, paint a coat of the wax on it (goes on like paint) and watch the magic happen. It will look rustic in no time!

Hi Diane. I thought I replied yesterday. No sanding. I just wiped it with a damp cloth. It took a lot of paint and sucked it up. My paint was thick so I added a bit of water. Some it looks white washed, but that's the look I wanted. I went back to add where needed before it completely dried. Then a light sanding where I wanted distress. Then added a clear wax coating.

I like the chest, but I don't like where you pull the drawers out. I would put some kind of knob in the middle of each, of your choice. I like the grain on the wood, but I also like the chalk paint and wax. It is a beautiful piece!!

Mix some paint with a bit of water and wipe it on the unfinished wood. It's not a paint, but it isn't really a stain either. The more water you add, the less intense the colour.

Diane, just give it me. I love the looks of it. You won't have nothing to worry about anymore. LOL!

Set it out in the yard, sprinkle it with water and walk away. Check back in three days.
