What can I do with the ash from our burn barrel?

We live on a heavily wooded property. As a result, we have lots of tree limbs and brush that we burn in a large barrel. What can we do with the ash? Do any plants benefit from the ash being mixed with the soil?

Thanks.

You can till it into your garden soil. Just make sure that the ash is completely cooled down before doing so. Or spread it evenly around garden beds to slugs and snails.

Hugel Kulture is a way to protect from drought and it is using all those branches. Look it up on the internet....there is a fair bit of information about it....another way is using it to make bio-char one of the best things in the world for soil....you can also shred them and compost them with your compost of bury them shredded instead of whole....there is a way to vegetable garden only using wood chips and never ever have to till the soil year after year.....spreading the ash all the time will cause trouble over the years and your soil will be too much one way....we heat with wood here only and I burn as slowly as I can to get lots of charcoal for the garden....the worms love it ....Island populations have used bio-char for centuries as they can not grow on sand alone and they could not just run down to the supermarket.....David Holmgren the co-founder of Permaculture lives about 10 minutes from me and nothing goes off his place and no plastic comes on.....he uses every organic thing that comes his way or is grown on their place.....oh you should see his soil !!!

That's a wondeful testament to hugelkulture and the power of permaculture. We recently got a burn barrel and are discussing how we will use the ashes.

If you have a large amount of ash from your burn barrel and are looking for ways to use it, here are a few ideas:

    1. Use the ash as a soil amendment in your garden. Ash can be high in nutrients and can help to improve soil structure and drainage. Just be sure to use it sparingly, as it can also raise the pH of the soil and make it more alkaline.
    2. Use the ash to de-ice sidewalks and driveways. The ash will provide traction and help to melt the ice.
    3. Mix the ash with water to create a paste that can be used as a natural insecticide. The paste can be applied to plants to help control pests.
    4. Use the ash to deter pests in your garden. Sprinkling ash around the base of plants can help to deter slugs, snails, and other garden pests.
    5. Use the ash to polish silver. Mix the ash with a small amount of water to create a paste, then use a soft cloth to rub the paste onto the silver. Rinse and dry thoroughly.

Remember to always use caution when handling ash, as it can be hot and can contain small embers that can start fires. Be sure to let the ash cool completely before attempting to use it for any of these purposes.

I sprinkle it around our grapes. Add it to sand for the chickens to dust in. The ash is great at cleaning the glass insert in a wood stove. Just dip a damp rag into the ash and then the sooty haze clinging to the glass comes off easily.
