How can I get rid of slugs?
apply food grade diatomeous earth
Slugs drown in beer and can't crawl over egg shells. Diatomeous earth will make your garden pest free and healthy.
Thanks for this advice!
I have used beer and it works
Copper is supposed to also keep them away. I've seen people make little copper circles/squares with whatever you have on hand such as tubing, copper sheeting scraps, even pennies. I haven't tried it, but have tried the beer in shallow tins or bottles that I cut down. I sometimes think it causes more slugs, so I'd recommend keeping them on the perimeter. Picking them off is probably the best method though. I usually keep an empty water bottle and some chopsticks near my garden and go out at dusk or at night with a flashlight to find them. They like the underside of leaves and stems. If you can catch them before they get too big, you should be able to keep your plants from getting too much damage. The eggshells do seem to help as well, but you need a lot of them if you have a large garden which isn't always practical.
I save egg shells all year, and they get very hard over time. In spring, when slugs are most active locally, I crush the egg shells and spread them around vulnerable plants. The edges are very sharp. The slugs do not want to run their slimy little bodies over the sharp edges. Thus the slugs do not eat the plants. NO, this does not kill the slugs, but it protects the plants and fertilizes the ground. It is also free.
Thanks, they can die happy ! CBrown
I use crushed egg shells as well and the shells are also good for your garden. Thanks
Thanks for this cool idea !
Spread used coffee grounds around your plants.
I do that but the little devils still get at my growing plants, I think I will have to go out on salt patrol ! Thanks.
i save eggshells and surround all of my plants w them. For large infestation I use sluggo at the beginning of the season and then they are more or less under control. I've planted all my seedlings and had them wiped out by the next morning...and that is frustrating.
Pay attention...you can lay boards around and they will hide underneath so you can knock them off, you can go out at night time with a flashlight and see how great there numbers are.
