I have deer too, and they are awful pests. But they do NOT eat daffodils or boxwood or any plant in the mint family (lemon balm, (bee balm, hummingbird mint, nepeta, etc.) They don't eat any of the lovely grasses that are available these days either, and it seems they don't eat any of the rudbeckia. I can tell you, don't even dream of planting HOSTA; it's deer candy. They haven't bothered my sage, which is gorgeous. Good luck. Maybe import some coyotes to guard your property!
Garden Centers now have plants that are deer free. It states deer free on the tags that come with the names of the plants. Or just ask the people in charge and they will lead the way.
Thank You!
we have kangaroos and wallabies here...and don't even think about the cockatoos that can destroy something in seconds....they even chase the horses off their food....we have a covered vegetable area of chicken wire for us it is walk in and quite large but you can build the size you like and fruit trees covered by white shade cloth 50 meters X 10 meters. 60 fruit trees....you can do the size you like
Thank you Margot, I'm going to the nursery today!
We live in the country and LUV our deer just not their flower/vege habit!! We plant marigolds or any stinky flowers, garlic or smelly herbs. The garlic I planted hasn't produced garlic yet but the rants ~green stems~ and flowers are extremely potent. Clearly they do not like stinky plants!! On a plus side, they ate some of our butterfly bushes and gave us several small plant last summer!!
They tend to avoid anything native to Australia for some reason. Also generally won't eat Rosemary, sage, ornamental grasses. I have a lot of Santa Barbara daisies they ignore also. Contrary to popular belief they will eat succulents. Also if they are hungry enough will eat just about anything. That's why plants are usually referred to as deer RESISTANT... not deer proof. What you plant will depend on your climate.
Thank You, I noticed that they don't eat marigold, so planting more! :-)
Marigolds, Rosemary, Sage. I don't think they eat chrysanthemums, either. Also check out this site: https://njaes.rutgers.edu/deerresistance/
