Honestly there is nothing wrong with them, perhaps it is just the color you do not like against your furniture. So should you choose to take on the task you will have to sand off the existing finish. If it is stain you would like to do then research Min Wax .com for color ispiration, stain and seal with there recommended sealer.
I like mixing wood tones but if you don't, do follow Janet's suggestion. If the color you want is a darker tone, you can use a gel stain without having to sand first. Here's a link for a brand I found through Google: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DSY50Y/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001DSY50Y&linkCode=as2&tag=maitanloit0c3-20&linkId=N7WCLFSOLH3KQZKB
Good luck.
You can try chalkpainting it! They have a lot of great colors out there to give them a fresh look, and it's a really easy process! No priming required :)
Our tastes are just different, but I think they go very nicely with your other furniture.
On the large one, if it comes apart, remove the top before refinishing. While it is apart is the time to cut one longer side, carefully, and make doors, for storage. Add some shelves in there. Or, cut both long sides and add shelves, and leave open for display.
On the tops, you can always cover them with papers, letters, photos, anything fairly flat, then top with glass on spacers. The clear, silicone type, cushion the glass, keep it from sliding, and are not a problem with color.
Good luck.
Try sanding them down then a creamy wash or leave them natural and add asatin poly finish. The glossy finish and dark tones doesn't flow with the more neutral, softer tones of the room.
