Liriope,monkey grass will grow shade or sun, and is good for erosion. Huchera,coral bells, is nice and brngs color. There are many beautiful hostas. There are many sedums that Will grow in shade,and are good for erosion. Some are fast growing. I have vinca(the perennial),grown in most of my beds. Some consider it invasive, but I don't have that problem. Creeping jenny is a beautiful,fast growing ground cover,but it can be invasive. I also have a nice moss garden growing in the shade. Lily of the valley,ajuga,and columbine will work to.
Hostas and most any kind of fern will grow well in shady, damp areas.
Don't forget astilbes...come in white pink red shades oh purple. And hellebores are great for early spring color.
Also primrose in spring.
How about starting a moss garden. It will spread over time & be soft underfoot as well as maintenence free.
any ground cover will bring nats, misquito's. they will live in there under the moss.
