Spray the lawn with Spectracide Weed and Feed in the hose end sprayer.
This will kill all weeds but not the grass. If there are any patches of grass, as I had, it will slowly fill in. You can apply seed about three weeks to a month after applying the weed killer. Lightly till the surface removing any dead weeds, sow the seeds, and keep the ground moist for the seeds to germinate.
This kind of buttercup requires a lot of moisture. Get rid of the moisture in the ground and the buttercups will go away. We pulled ours, put ground cover down and covered with several inches of wood chips. We planted blueberries up above which drink a lot of water, keeping it from going where the buttercups used to be. No chemicals. No problem, now.
